
Vintage is still as exciting and interesting to me as it ever was. Today I test Vintage weekly with a small group and still venture out to as many tournaments as possible. Since then I’ve won 5 Black Lotuses, one awarded to me for first place at the first ever New York Stack Exchange tournament. In 2008 I hit my stride winning the Vintage Championship and taking home many pieces of Power 9 as prizes from smaller events. Almost once a month they held a 100+ player Vintage tournament, that really got me plugged into the tournament scene. We’d test and build decks and then take trips to Columbus where we’d go barnstorming at small local tournaments.Īfter college I longed for more serious competition and the Star City Power 9 tournament series arrived to fill that void. When I returned we played several games and it wasn’t long afterwards that we started to get serious about Type 1. I insisted that he stayed put while I went back to my dorm to get my deck. Back in those days it was easy to win a game of Magic just on the merit of owning better cards than my opponent. I always wanted to play with the best cards, so once I understood the advantage a Mox had over a basic land, I had to get my hands on the full Power 9.
